Why Prodigal God?

You might be wondering how I came up with a name like ProdigalGod.com.

As one person asked me recently, doesn’t “prodigal” mean “wasteful?” Am I saying God is wasteful? Others might think that “prodigal” means someone who has run away, like the prodigal son.

But at least one dictionary definition of “prodigal” is “lavish, extravagant, and unrestrained” (I first realized this while reading Lloyd Ogilvie’s book, Autobiography of God: God Revealed in the Parables of Jesus). Well, in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, who is “lavish, extravagant, and unrestrained?” It’s the father who demonstrates those qualities in the parable familiar to most of us. And since the father in the story represents our Heavenly Father, it’s a story of how lavish, how extravagant, and how unrestrained our Father’s love for us is.

And so, our Father is prodigal! Thus the name ProdigalGod.com.
